They say that Bollywood producers are averse to taking risks and like sticking to non-risk scripts. This is the reason why Bollywood sticks to ghisa-pita formula scripts that aim to bring in the moolah.
But let us tell you that some of the top Bollywood heroines have proven this adage wrong. These heroines have not only produced meaningful cinema but they have also proven that if the script is appealing, there’s no harm in taking some risks.
Here are five actresses who decided that they should take the risk because they believed in the script of the film that they were producing. We have taken inputs from Vogue while compiling this marvellous list of actresses who have become super successful producers in their own right. 1. Deepika Padukone:
This year, she will be co-producing Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak. The drama is based on the true-life story of Laxmi Agarwal, a school girl who survived a violent acid attack by an acquaintance which completely disfigured her face. Yes, Deepika stars in the film as Laxmi. This shows Deepika’s courage and conviction to the story that is being told. All our best wishes to Deepika and Meghna Gulzar for her upcoming venture.
2. Priyanka Chopra:
She has set up a production house called Purple Pebble Pictures which produces meaningful cinema in regional languages. Can you imagine any Bollywood producer doing that? It is a very less known fact that Priyanka’s regional films have earned various awards for their superb content.Ventilator, a Marathi comedy-drama released in 2016, won three National Awards and went on to become a box-office success. Chopra’s next release will be Firebrand for Netflix—a Marathi drama directed by Arunaraje Patil, it tells the story of a lawyer and sexual assault victim who tries to balance the stresses of her professional life with a shaky marriage.
3. Madhuri Dixit:
The legendary actress has also ventured into regional cinema. She is producing a Marathi film which is called 15th August. Slated to release on Netflix this year, 15th August is a slice-of-life entertainer that unfolds over a day as the residents of a chawl gear up for the flag-hoisting ceremony. “It is about how love sets us free,” says Dixit to Vogue.
4. Chitrangada Singh:
Not many know that Chitrangada Singh was the producer of the film Soorma that revolved around the life of star hockey Sandeep Singh. Chitrangada Singh says that she was moved when she heard about the struggles that Sandeep Singh went through after becoming a star hockey player and captaining India. She decided that she must make into a film and thus Soorma was born and simultaneously, we saw Chitragangada Singh as producer.
5. Anushka Sharma:
Anushka Sharma is of course the most well-known in the list having produced films like NH10. Interestingly after NH10 became a success, Anushka Sharma took an interest into ghost films and paranormal film genre which is a very off-the-track genre of films to follow in India, even though it has started to become more mainstream now. After the success of their first film, NH10, the actor produced Phillauri in 2017 and Pari in 2018. Both the films didn’t do quite well at the box office.
